Setting Yourself Up For Success

Setting Yourself Up For Success

goal setting for success

Let the start of the new season inspire you to achieve something that you’ve always wanted to.  Perhaps you’d like to cook more meals at home, regularly prepare homemade lunches for work, schedule a few nights a week to eat together as a family, or to start being more physically active. Whatever your concern is, you are going to need to set a goal to successfully track and accomplish it.  S.M.A.R.T. goal setting is a guaranteed method that will enable you to reach your goals over the next few months.

S.M.A.R.T. stands for:

  • Specific – What habit would you like to change? When can you make time to work on your goal?
  • Measureable – How are you going to keep track of your goal?
  • Attainable – Is it a small goal that will make a big difference over time?
  • Realistic – Can you picture yourself achieving your goal? When you set smaller goals they are easier to accomplish and you will find them to be more motivational.
  • Time-bound – Set a deadline for your goal.

How to set a S.M.A.R.T goal:

Step 1

Identify your concern

Example of a concern:  I have not been exercising enough and I’m noticing that I’ve been steadily gaining weight.

Step 2

Set a S.M.A.R.T. goal

Example of a S.M.A.R.T. goal:  This September I am going to add a reminder on my phone to go for a 30 minute walk every other night after dinner. After I complete my walk, I am going to keep a tally of how many walks I have gone on this month.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish” – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
